After leaving Oxford, she worked as a journalist for The Times of London, writing feature articles on literature and the arts, before moving to Paris to work for Vogue magazine. She married R. P.

Blacker in 1929, but her marriage was annulled three years later after his infidelity became public knowledge. Spender became a freelance writer, writing for Time magazine and The Observer, before emigrating to the United States in 1938. Her first book, The Masks of Love (1941), was not published until 1948.

Having settled in New York City, she became a friend of Ernest Hemingway and dedicated her next book to him. Her first novel was Men Are Gods (1951), which was followed by many other successful novels including The Moment of Change (1961) and A Distant Shore (1968). Spender died in New York City at the age of 69 years old after having suffered from diabetes.
